About This Spot

Walter’s Deli sits quietly on Broad Street, a small but spirited counter-service spot where the pace of Nantucket slows just enough for you to savor a moment amid your day. It’s the kind of place you stumble upon between errands or before catching a ferry, drawn in by the easy hum of locals and travelers lining up for something straightforward yet thoughtfully crafted. Here, the mood is unpretentious and brisk—a friendly nod to those who value a good sandwich without fuss or frills.

The atmosphere is defined by its simplicity: no seating, just a hassle-free walk-up window that encourages grabbing your meal to go and finding a nearby bench or harbor-side spot to settle in. This practical, no-table setup invites a different kind of pleasure—one where the food is the main event without distraction. There’s a comforting rhythm in knowing you can rely on swift, warm service even when the lunchtime crowd builds.

More than just quick bites, Walter’s serves up a sincere taste of Nantucket’s coastal charm through its specialty sandwiches that carry both familiar comforts and local flair. The cold lobster roll, a hallmark of summer on these shores, arrives with generous chunks of sweet lobster meat nestled in a buttery toasted roll, perfectly balancing richness and restraint. And for those craving a heartier option, the Reuben and classic deli sandwiches hold their own, offering mild indulgence wrapped in layered textures and flavors that invite a slow enjoyment, whether you’re pausing between sights or packing a ferry ride picnic.

What lingers after a visit here is a sense of honest, unforced satisfaction—a reminder that great food doesn’t always need a polished setting or elaborate plating. It’s a place where each bite feels like a small story from the island, told simply and well, in a spot designed for locals and visitors alike to gather brief but meaningful moments over a shared love for good sandwiches.

This was my first stop at Nantucket. I got to try the Reuben and a cold Lobster roll. The service was quick and easy. The sandwiches both tasted great and it was like getting a nice intro to Nantucket. Small place with no seating. Just takeout only.

Lobster Roll walk Up Stand: Lobsta ain't cheap so no point in paying for bells and whistles. Walter's serves heaps (8+ oz., big enough to share) of lightly seasoned, lightly (or no) sauce, Lobsta meat, including claws. ($37). Toasted roll is rich with buttery flavor. Didn't try the cold version, but that's an option.

There are many reasons to visit Cape Cod and its islands - one of them being the great food and fine dining. To my surprise my entire family agreed the best food on our visit were the sandwiches from Walter's Deli. Coming from NYC we have high standards which Walter's completely exceeded. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that the counter lady didn't give us napkins - even though I asked for some and she said they were in the bag. To the guy making the sandwiches- my compliments !

Walter’s fed us a few times when we were there this May. The hot Lobster roll was delicious. I also had the Rueben for the ferry ride home and everyone was jealous! And don’t forget to get a huge brownie, and do not share!

Excellent sandwiches (especially the Reuben) and might be the best lobster roll I had between Newport, Cuttyhunk, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. Would heartily recommend.

Visited Nantucket Friday. Checked menu at several places before selecting Walter's Deli. Had the corn beef/pastrami Reuben. My favorite sandwich and I am a seafood guy. Fantastic and delicious!!! Generous portions and priced right. My wife had the roast beef sandwich. It was a hit as well. Person that made the sandwiches was a nice guy to boot. Sat on a bench in front of a realtor's office. Realtor asked me where I bought the Reuben because it looked so good.

The lobster roll here is fantastic and full of lobster. I got it cold, but it is available hot or cold. The bun is warm on the ‘cold’ style. The watermelon juice is delicious and super refreshing on a hot summer day.

Best lobster roll on the island bar none. First ate here in 2022 and was our first stop when we came back in 2025 & it’s just as great with its delicious Texas toast style bread and amazingly generous lobster portions. I got it twice in my week visit both hot and cold versions and loved them equally. WORTH THE PRICE! Get it with some Nantucket crisps, a crunchy soda or lemonade, and grab a bench to enjoy in front of the whaling museum while people watching!
